Umbraco 17 is here. It's a significant milestone for anyone running their website on the platform.

As Umbraco partners since 2008, we've seen Umbraco through nearly every version, so we know a thing or two about seamless upgrades. This exciting transition to 17 is no different. Through every release, we're hands-on, testing migrations, and always thinking about upgrade pathways for clients.

What could Umbraco 17 mean for your platform?

What are the benefits of Umbraco 17?

Key benefits include:

• The new Bellissima backoffices use Web Components and TypeScript, which replace outdated frameworks, reducing risk and maintenance overhead.

• Cleaner structure, removal of AngularJS, and improved tooling deliver faster development and easier upgrades.

• Fewer patches, fewer breaking changes, and a predictable upgrade path mean less spend over time.

• The ability to choose any modern framework, like React, Vue, Svelte, and more, instead of relying on one approach.

• Modern technology practices attract more like-minded developers to the already world-class Umbraco community.

Like every major upgrade, Umbraco 17 seeks to make your website lighter, more sustainable, and cheaper.  You can read about the full release from Umbraco directly here.

What does the Umbraco 17 release mean for you?

• If you're on Umbraco 13 (the current LTS), you're in an ideal position. Once 17 is stable, you can upgrade directly to 17, following an LTS-to-LTS path. Complex or heavily customised solutions require a tailored migration plan, but the path remains predictable and low-risk.

• You're already very close if you're on Umbraco 15 or 16. These versions share the same architecture as 17, making the upgrade process lighter, faster, and less disruptive

• If your site is still on Umbraco 8 or 10, these versions are unsupported, meaning there will be no further security or patch updates. Chat to our Platinum Partner Umbraco team to check your compatibility and provide the perfect upgrade path that aligns with your business goals and technical priorities.

Will my custom extensions and packages still work?

The new Umbraco backoffice in version 17 uses a modern architecture, so some extensions and custom tools must be updated.

We review what needs refactoring and prepare a structured plan to ensure everything works as expected before any upgrade is recommended.

Inside the 2025 Umbraco 17 developer workshop

As Umbraco Platinum Partners and experts in Umbraco enterprise developmentwe often join the community before major releases to work directly with the new back offices and architecture and give it a whirl.

In the latest Umbraco v17 this October, we:

• Did successful test migrations from v13 to 17
• Used the backoffice to test real scenarios within the v17 backoffice
• Chatted with the developer community about ideas and possibilities with v17!

It was a great day hosted by the UK Umbraco Foundation. Getting together allowed us to test real scenarios, explore migration pathways, and engage with Umbraco HQ engineers. Although it's nice to meet up, the main point is to ensure that brand upgrades are guided by real experience, not assumptions!

How is Cogworks prepared for v17 upgrades?

Honestly? We're always prepared for new versions. Yes, Umbraco version 17 is new, but we always ensure that our clients have complete visibility into plans, upgrade paths, and predictions well in advance.

When will Cogworks recommend upgrading?

Our team always recommends being on the LTS version of everything. Once it's confirmed stable, we recommend upgrading.

With strategic planning and early involvement, Cogworks ensure every client is positioned to take full advantage of what version 17 offers (at the right time for their platform).

As we approach the release, now is an ideal time to assess your current platform's performance, upgrade readiness, and long-term sustainability.
