A couple of years ago, Cogworks released CogWorks CogFlare, an open-source Umbraco package for smarter Cloudflare caching and automated cache purging. (You can view it on Umbraco Marketplace right now.)

Since its launch, we're chuffed to say CogFlare has been downloaded over 6,000 times, helping teams across a wide range of industries build faster, more efficient, and more sustainable Umbraco websites. 😱

What does CogFlare help?

With the right implementation, CogFlare uses caching in Umbraco to:

How does CogFlare work?

CogFlare works simply by purging Cloudflare caches only when content has actually changed.

When content changes, it:

• Detects what's been updated

• Targets only the affected pages

• Tells Cloudflare to clear those caches

• Serves fresh content straight away

The benefits of CogFlare are best felt when used with strict CloudFlare cache rules that aggressively cache pages without risking stale content. So basically, you need to have your CloudFlare rules optimised really well to use this package.

We’ve been working closely with teams like these for several years, and it’s great to see shared tooling delivering long-term value beyond a single project.

By reducing origin traffic and letting Cloudflare do the heavy lifting, CogFlare helps keep platforms fast, stable, and efficient. Less server work means lower energy usage, better performance, and more predictable running costs.

Improving CogFlare with community

All open-source Umbraco packages, such as CogFlare, attract valuable contributions from the community, one of the many reasons Umbraco remains consistently ahead of the curve in innovation.

Recently, Jen Wolke, Senior Umbraco Developer at ProWorks, got in touch following a Cloudflare security update and suggested a set of code changes to keep CogFlare aligned with the latest Cloudflare requirements.

As a Umbraco Platinum Partner, contributions like this are important to us. We were pleased to review Jen's changes and include them in the latest version of CogFlare.

Open source works best when people share their knowledge. The Umbraco community continues to prove just how strong that model is.

Thank you, Jen.👏

What's new with CogFlare?

We've had a few questions about future compatibility, particularly around Umbraco v17.

We’re happy to share that a v17-compatible version of CogFlare is on the way, with release planned over the next couple of weeks.
