The UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) embarked on its first cloud migration, moving over 70 legacy systems to modernise their reliance on outdated technologies. Cogworks partnered with the CAA to deliver a scalable web architecture using .NET, Umbraco, and Microsoft Azure, ensuring the CAA had total control and ownership of their new solution.
Mayday: Legacy System Challenges Ahead
Why The CAA took action:
Outdated Legacy Systems: Many key applications were still running on unsupported SQL Server and Windows Server versions, creating security risks and operational inefficiencies within their legacy system.
Migration Complexity: The CAA needed to migrate these legacy systems into a modern cloud infrastructure, ensuring old applications could be retired safely and efficiently.
Long-Term Self-Sufficiency: The organisation needed to reduce its ongoing reliance on external vendors. To do that, the CAA needed expert training and support to manage the new cloud environment independently.
Elevating Systems with Modern Cloud Infrastructure
Cloud Migration on Microsoft Azure: As the first cloud project at the CAA, over 70 legacy applications were moved to Microsoft Azure, providing a scalable, secure infrastructure for modernised applications and future growth. We started with The National Aircraft Register (G-INFO), carefully optimising it through quick-fire iterative releases.
Umbraco and .NET Transformation: Umbraco and .NET created a flexible, secure platform for easy content and services management.
Ensuring Total Ownership: Cogworks worked closely with CAA teams, providing workshops and training to ensure long-term sustainability and independent management of the new cloud infrastructure.
Scalability and Resilience: The platform's scalability was proven during the 2017 Monarch Airlines crisis, handling high traffic by scaling rapidly across 50 Azure Web Apps and 6 database clusters, something the legacy system couldn't support.
Reaching New Heights in Content Management, Security and Scalability
Legacy System Retirement: Over 70 legacy applications were migrated to the new web platform, allowing the CAA to safely retire systems running unsupported SQL Server and Windows Server versions.
Modern Architecture: The combination of Umbraco and .NET created a high-performance, user-friendly architecture, improving content management and system scalability.
Self-Sufficiency: The CAA's internal teams can independently manage and maintain their new cloud-based infrastructure thanks to the collaborative approach and thorough training.
Better Resilience: The cloud-based platform proved its resilience during the Monarch Airlines crisis, handling high traffic seamlessly and ensuring consistent performance across multiple global data centres.
Giving the CAAs' Digital Solutions Wings
Cogworks’ partnership with the CAA delivered a modern, cloud-based platform built using Umbraco and .NET, transforming their legacy systems and ensuring scalability, security, and efficiency.
As the CAA’s first steps with the cloud, this project marked a strike toward digital transformation. Cogworks played a crucial role in empowering the CAA’s internal teams to independently manage their new infrastructure, paving the way for future innovation.
