Umbraco Release Version 13: Here's What You Need to Know

Umbraco Version 13 introduces .NET 8 and webhooks; here's why there's an easy upgrade path for you, no matter the version.

December 14th 2023: Umbraco releases version 13.

Umbraco has exciting news: Umbraco 13 is out; this new version brings lots of cool stuff.

The good news is that this release is intentionally set close to the .NET release, so both versions will benefit from support.

What does this mean for Umbraco Version 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12?

Umbraco Version 8

Now in the sunset phase, Umbraco 8 will soon be entering the security phase in February 2024, which means it'll stay secure but won't benefit from bug fixes or the latest features.

Umbraco Version 9

If you're still on this version, note that it reached its end-of-life on December 16, 2022.

Umbraco Version 10

Umbraco version 10 currently enjoys long-term support, ensuring security patches, critical fixes, and updates. By June 2024, it will shift to the security phase.

Umbraco Version 11

Umbraco version 11 reached its End-of-Life on December 1, 2023.

Umbraco Version 12

From December 14th, 2023, Umbraco version 12 will be the support version of Umbraco, so version 12 will get security patches, critical fixes, security advisories, and updates until March 29, 2024.

If you’re on any of the above versions, it’s a great idea to start constructing the upgrade path that suits your business and your users.

Umbraco Version 13: What's inside?

This version has lots of great things to look forward to:

New tech updates:

There's a bunch of new stuff, like .NET 8 and C# 12, making things work faster and wiser (performance improvements and new language features).

Easier setup:

Starting applications will be more straightforward with the Minimal Hosting Model. This aligns with Microsoft's best practices regarding hosting and should be an easy upgrade path, so you shouldn't have to change your hosting model.

Umbraco has levelled up how it talks to tools, which means more cool things can happen. Webhooks make things like headless work easier; you get notified when something on the site changes. This dynamic has been a feature of Heartcore for a while, so it's nice to see this come to the core product.

New and improved content delivery API:

This updated feature lets developers limit and expand nested fields, which gives you better control of your content and better flexibility and performance (especially when dealing with complex data structures!).

Improved user experience:

How you log in and use Umbraco will be friendlier and safer.

Version 14 is on the horizon for 2024

Version 14, due for release in May 2024, comes with a completely new backoffice packed with APIs and webhooks. The new backoffice broadens Umbraco's reach far beyond the .NET developer but makes it more accessible to any developer, closely matching the latest broader .NET tech Microsoft trends, opening the realm of what's possible far beyond what we know now…

Should you upgrade?

Yes, you'll need to upgrade, especially when the security support falls away for whichever version you might be on now.

Of course, we always recommend upgrading to the latest version when possible.

Using the latest version of Umbraco ensures your brand's security. It offers excellent support and use of innovative technology and third-party applications, like composable DXP integrations that drive your business forward.

Not everyone is on the latest version, so if that's the boat you're in, don't panic.

There is more than one way to select the perfect upgrade path for your business right now, from extending licenses to upgrading LTS versions or opting for a specific version, like v13 or 14.
